Arts and Culture
Our arts and culture offerings cover music, dance, theater and the visual arts — including performance, production, business and sales, history, theory and education. In addition to various degree programs, App State has 14 exhibition and performance venues on campus and more than 30 community outreach programs that support programs in this discipline.
Business
The diverse scope of business programs at App State prepares students for careers in fields such as accounting, marketing, management, computer information systems, human resources, health care administration, economics, finance and banking, international business, risk management and insurance, supply chain management, the music industry, mathematics and the emerging field of sustainable building systems.
Communication and Writing
This discipline prepares students for a variety of careers, including advertising, public relations, journalism, creative writing, advocacy and nonprofit work, public policy, technical writing, communication planning, political campaigning and more. Students can find degree programs in two departments at App State: Communication and English, both of which focus on strengthening students’ ability to think critically and write effectively.
Design
Design is the process of imagination, creation and form — whether the end product is art, furniture, systems, buildings, wayfinding, fashion, technology or theater sets. App State has a number of design-related programs in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and Reich College of Education.
Education/Teaching
So you want to teach? App State has a rich history in preparing teachers for K–12 and beyond. Whether your interest is elementary teaching or discipline-specific instruction — such as the arts, science, nursing and more — App State has a program for you. Depending on the field, education programs can be found within the Reich College of Education or the respective academic colleges.
Environmental/Natural Resources
Do you want to research, manage or protect earth materials, landscapes or natural systems? This discipline embraces App State’s diverse programs in geology, geography and sustainable development — each of which can lead to a variety of careers or graduate study.
Global Studies
Programs in this discipline educate students to be globally competent at a high level, whether it is for careers in business, leadership or the humanities. Academic requirements include language training and study abroad.
Health Sciences
The health sciences incorporate programs designed to enhance the health and quality of life for individuals, families and communities through the application of science. The field includes the study of medicine, nutrition, exercise science and other health-related subjects.
Humanities
The humanities explore ideas and help us understand and interpret the human experience, at both the individual and cultural level. Programs within the humanities include languages, literature, history, philosophy and religion, anthropology and culture, as well as interdisciplinary study across these and other disciplines.
Human Services
Human services is a broad term for fields that work to improve the health and wellness of individuals, families and society. These programs might help people in crisis or support them in achieving stability or self-sufficiency.
Languages
App State’s offerings include majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Spanish and Hispanic Studies — as well as teacher preparation programs in French and Spanish. Students also can choose among minors in Arabic, Chinese, Classical and Mediterranean Civilizations, French and Francophone Studies, German, Japanese, and applied linguistics.
Leadership
This discipline prepares students for leadership roles in education, business and other career settings. Depending on the field, leadership programs can be found within the Reich College of Education or the respective academic colleges.
Life Sciences
The life sciences encompass branches of science that deal with living organisms — such as microorganisms, plants, animals and humans — and their life processes.
Mathematics and Statistics
Mathematics is a science dealing with quantities, magnitudes and forms and their relationships. A study in its own right, mathematics can be applied to other fields such as physics and engineering. Statistics helps give understanding to mathematical facts and data. You will find mathematics and statistics programs in App State’s College of Arts and Sciences and Walker College of Business.
Physical Sciences
The physical sciences include the branches of science that deal with inanimate matter or energy — such as physics, astronomy, geology and chemistry.
Pre-Professional
This discipline prepares students for professional degree programs after graduation from App State, such as medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary or law school. Special advising is provided for students considering this path.
Recreation, Tourism and Sport
This discipline combines health and wellness with the outdoors. App State’s geographical setting in a thriving town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a superb location for exploring the areas of recreation, tourism and sport, as well as the industries that support them.
Social Sciences
This discipline focuses on the study of people and societies, including their relationships, customs, activities and cultures.
Sustainability
App State defines sustainability as the 3E’s: environmental stewardship, economic responsibility and social equity, which create a framework for scholarship and research across a number of academic colleges and departments.
Technology
Technology takes many forms — from computer science and instructional design, to building design, energy efficiency, educational systems and aspects of the arts. App State offers a variety of avenues for studying and working in technology.
